Open Vs. Closed
OPEN CONCEPT
In an Open Concept floor plan, no walls exist between the different areas, so a living room, dining area and kitchen will share one large space. Whereas in a Closed Concept the spaces are more intimate with walls providing more acceptance of either one of these concepts hugely depends on what works best for you.
Here are a few things you might want to consider when purchasing a home with either one of these concepts. I’m going to list the Pros and Cons of each space and maybe you can decide which works best for you and your family.
Cons
Cooking Aromas
Visual clutter
Energy Efficiency
Noise Travel
Safety hazard (hot appliances and small children)
Pros
Better natural light
Line of sight
Accessibility
Better resale value
Great for entertaining
This space is perfect if you love to be a Host and entertain, you can prepare drinks while on looking towards your guests at the dining table. Following up on your kids and their homework as you cook dinner is super convenient and the decor for the space can be cohesive with one theme. Growing up in apartments with small rooms and sometimes a non existent dinning room (space), I appreciate and adore an Open concept floor plan. One con that have me second guessing is the safety hazard. If you have small children (babies-toddlers), keeping an eye on them might be difficult if the appliances are hot from cooking. It won’t be as simple to close the kitchen off.
CLOSED CONCEPT
With this floor plan as I stated before, Its all I am familiar with. I come from a really big family so when it comes time for a celebration at a relatives home, the space immediately becomes cramped and small. I love family and everyone not being able to fit in the living room for game not is the best to me. Sound control is a major plus as well as potentially lowering energy costs.
Pros
Privacy
Lower energy bills
Cozier rooms
More design options
Sound control
Cons
Lower resale value
Less natural light
No line of sight
Less accessible
Small spaces
My overall favorite is the Open Floor Concept, whats yours?
